The STSM of Oğuzhan Der from Bandırma Onyedi Eylul University

Your Name and Affiliation:

Oğuzhan Der, Bandırma Onyedi Eylul University

Your Host Name and Affiliation:

Prof. Enrico Gnecco, Jagiellonian University

What was/were the goals of your STSM:

The main goal of this STSM is to investigate the early-stage wear mechanisms of layered materials such as MoS₂, WSe₂, and MoSe₂ in aqueous environments using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Through scratching tests performed at different temperatures and experimental parameters, the wear resistance of these materials will be comparatively assessed. The study aims to contribute to the development of durable coatings for marine applications. In addition, the outcomes will directly support the objectives of the MecaNano COST Action by advancing the understanding of nanoscale mechanical effects.

Did the STSM help your research? In what way(s)?

Yes, the STSM significantly supported my research by providing access to advanced AFM facilities and expertise that are not available at my home institution. It enabled me to perform nanoscale wear tests on layered materials in aqueous environments, generating high-quality data on their tribological behaviour. The experience also fostered valuable scientific exchange and collaboration, which will strengthen future research directions and publications.

Would you recommend others to apply for an STSM?

Yes, I would strongly recommend others to apply for an STSM. It provides a unique opportunity to access advanced research facilities, gain new skills, and collaborate with leading experts in the field. Moreover, it fosters international networking and interdisciplinary cooperation, which can greatly enhance both personal and institutional research capacity.
