MSE 2026 Symposium S06 – Defect Phases for Materials Design

We are pleased to invite you to submit an abstract to Symposium S06: “Defect Phases for Materials Design, which will take place at the Materials Science and Engineering Conference (MSE) 2026 in Darmstadt, Germany from 29 Sept – 01 Oct 2026.

Abstract submission is here and deadline is 31 January 2026.

This symposium is dedicated to the concept of defect phases as a unifying framework for materials design. Building on two highly successful approaches in materials science—thermodynamic and kinetic descriptions for microstructure control, and the manipulation of crystal defects to tailor mechanical and functional properties—the symposium explicitly addresses current efforts to merge these perspectives. By treating defects, together with their structural, chemical, and thermodynamic complexity, holistically as defect phases, new pathways for understanding and designing materials emerge.

We invite experimental, computational, and theoretical contributions that address defect phases of any dimensionality (point, line, or planar defects). Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Experimental characterization of defect phases
  • Relationships between defect phases, defect transitions, and material properties
  • Computational and theoretical assessments of defect phases
  • Competition and interaction between defect phases of the same or different dimensionalities

We also particularly welcome submissions from researchers whose work offers complementary or cross-disciplinary perspectives on these themes.

We would be delighted to welcome your contribution and to foster exciting discussions on this emerging materials design strategy at MSE 2026.
