A fully-funded 4-year PhD position is available within a collaboration between KU Leuven (prof. Joris Everaerts) and imec, which is a world-leading research & development organization active in the fields of nanoelectronics and digital technologies. The PhD aims at studying and improving the mechanical behavior of nano-interconnects. These interconnects handle power and signal distribution in electronic circuits between transistors and to the outside world. In next-generation IC’s, the goal is to use interconnects that are below 10 nm in width, separated by only a few nm’s of air. Their mechanical stability will be studied via advanced nanomechanical testing combined with simulations in order to understand and avoid potential failure. Therefore, this PhD position offers a unique opportunity to perform cutting edge research at one of the most innovative research organizations in Belgium. Applicants with a background in materials or mechanical engineering are highly encouraged to apply.
Application deadline: April 15th.
Starting date : September 2025
Duration : 4 years
