SUMMARY:MecaNano Winter School
DESCRIPTION:Digitization has increased the effectiveness and sustainability of scientific workflows tremendously. Today we can use systems that\, while we generate research data\, associate\, keep track and manage related contextual (meta)data in a digital and (semi-)automated manner. \nAt the same time many labs stand at the brink of deciding and implementing certain software solutions in their workflows being confronted to many questions : \n\nWhat are the required ingredients of such a system?\nHow do these components need to work together for effectively managing data in the scientific context?\nWhat metadata do I need to collect?\nHow can I ensure my data can be used further?\nHow is metadata effectively collected and managed?\n\nIn this winter-school we will take a look “under the hood” and explore what essential components are needed for an exemplary research data management system. The school will consist of lectures but have a focus on active involvement of participants in group discussions\, and hands-on development and programming sessions. \nFor more information and registering go here

SUMMARY:WG3 online seminar
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar series users and/or developers of different electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) that are used in the domain of Material Science and Engineering will introduce “their” ELN. The aim is to get an overview of the respective software\, who application in everyday workflows\, point out strengths and maybe touch upon weaknesses. Following a ~ 30 min presentation and/or demo we aim to allocate some time for open discussions and Q&A with the presenters. \nThe seminar aims at scientists that would like to digitize the documentation of their research and are at a point where they need to choose betwen different RDM systems and ELNs. Participants will get some 1st hand information from users and developers and will have the chance to ask additional questions that might be applicable to their situation. There is no prior knowledge required to participate in the seminar series. \nCurrently the following dates are confirmed: \n\nApril 17th 11 am:\n\nHüseyin Uzun (https://orcid.org/0009-0005-4968-3564; University of Frankfurt)\nELabFTW (https://www.deltablot.com/)\nSign up here\n\n\nMay 22nd 11 am:\n\nFabian Kirchner (Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon)\nHerbie ELN (https://codebase.helmholtz.cloud/hereon-mb/herbie)\nSign up here\n\n\nJune 26th 11 am :\n\nHanna Tsybenko (https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7691-2856; Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH)\nPasta ELN (https://pypi.org/project/pasta-eln/)\nSign up here\n\n\nSeptember 4th 11 am:\n\nRostyslav Kuzyakiv (ETH Zürich)\nopenBis (https://openbis.ch/)\nSign up here\n\n\nOctober 30th 11 am:\n\nNico Brandt (https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3860-1376) and Johannes Steinhülb (both: Karlsruhe Institute of Technology)\nKadi4Mat: Insights into an interoperable research data infrastructure (https://kadi.iam.kit.edu/)\nSign up here\n\n\n\nInformation regarding the specific ELNs can also be found in the ELN finder (https://eln-finder.ulb.tu-darmstadt.de/home)

SUMMARY:First topical workshop on Machine Learning
DESCRIPTION:First topical workshop on Machine Learning\nThe abstract submission is still open for our 2-day event related to the WG4 “Machine Learning” here: https://mecanano-wg4-24.sciencesconf.org/ \nThe workshop will be held on 22-23 February 2024 in Louvain-la-Neuve\, Belgium. (Note: this is a different city to Louvain!) \nThe community is rather diverse and has a large range of experienced in the use of ML: many of you already use this technique routinely while others do not have hands-on experience with ML\, but would be interested to exploit its powerful capacities on their research data. Thus\, the meeting is designed to meet everyone’s needs: four one-hour tutorials are planned that will provide in-depth case studies through examples of using ML on experimental and modelling data. In addition\, contributed talks and posters will give insights into various successful applications of ML. \nWe want to emphasize that in accordance with the concept of the meeting\, we not only accept abstracts on already established applications of ML\, but also on promising ideas of future applications. \nIn addition\, everyone interested to ML is welcome to attend\, even without submitting an abstract. Registration will open soon!

SUMMARY:WG4 online pitching event
DESCRIPTION:The working group WG4 on “Machine learning” of the MecaNano Cost Action organizes an online Pitching Event similarly to the successful such events of WG1 and WG2. The main purpose is to get to know each other and for the WG4 leaders to assess the expertise/needs of the community regarding machine learning. This event is planned October 23\, 2023\, from 9.00 – 12.00. During the event all participants will have the opportunity to briefly introduce themselves\, their work and their expectations from WG4. This will be followed by a discussion of the measures\, meetings\, and actions that we will take together in the WG. We kindly invite you to indicate your participation by providing us with the following information no later than October 10\, 2023 at info@mecanano.com . Please include “WG4 pitching event” as subject: Name\, Position\, Affiliation and Country\, Research area(s) keywords\, Machine learning experience (none\, beginner\, intermediate\, advanced). From around October 15\, we will confirm your participation and send you a presentation template. We are looking forward to hearing from you!

SUMMARY:First topical MecaNano workshop on Research Data Management
DESCRIPTION:Research Data Management (RDM) addresses crucial cornerstones of modern research. \nOn one hand\, ever increasing complexity in our experiments mean that we need to improve the way we track our experimental samples\, the experiments we conduct and the machines and tools we use at each step. The resulting data needs to be organised such that we can adhere to FAIR data principles and best practices. \nOn the other hand\, many modern analysis techniques\, from statistical modelling to machine learning\, require data as input and machine learning in particular typically requires large amount of data. RDM helps us to lay the foundation\, so that we easily find relevant data\, and use them in the next step of the analysis. \nThe workshops aims at all levels\, and we welcome\, in particular\, all members who are just about to embark on research data management. \nWe look forward to welcome you to Aachen in September. \nVolker Hofmann & Ulrich Kerzel

SUMMARY:MecaNano's 1st summer school in Roma
DESCRIPTION:The first of two planned summer schools of the MecaNano Cost Action will take place on 24-28th of July in Rome. The in-person event will take place at Università deglistudi Roma Tre\, Department of Civil\, Computer and Aeronautical Engineering in Rome. Christoph Kirchlechner of KIT and Marco Sebastiani of Roma Tre are organizing this event.  Speakers will give presentations on topics related to the mechanics at the nano- and microscales to cover both experimental and simulation aspects. Among them\, George Pharr (Texas A&M) – yes\, from the well-known “Oliver and Pharr Method”! – will give a course on advanced nanoindentation\, Daniel Kiener (Montanuniversität Leoben) will discuss on micro fractures\, and Erik Bitzek (Max Plank Institute of Iron Research) is set to talk on plasticity and dislocation mechanics. Besides the theoretical lectures\, practical data analysis will also be a feature of the summer\nschool. The summer school is directed towards Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers in nanoscale and microscale mechanics. It is not necessary for attendees to have indepth understanding in a field related to MecaNano\, nor is it require to know a specific programming language. Only the willingness and enthusiasm to learn and to ask difficult questions to the lecturers are desirable.
